Royal Wedding, Twins and Mayday celebrations!!!

What an amazing month for celebrations!!!

A fabulous Royal wedding and the twins were born!!!

Congratulations sis!!!!

So another busy month and again sorry I haven't written for a long time (thank you to those of you for reminding me!!!).

Well the beginning of April seems a long time away and I started by making the monthly cupcakes for staff at school. As I hadn't been there I wasn't sure what was going on but thought that they all deserved an early easter treat so for the beginning of the month I made Easter cupcakes. Chocolate, coffee and walnut, vanilla and raspberry and vanilla - yum!

Then it was back to an old favourite for Sam's birthday with Thomas the Tank Engine. I haven't made Thomas for years but it's still great to do and I had lots of fun with all the coals and the fiddly bits. Children's cakes are always so much fun to do - they are brightly coloured and have lots of detail!

April is full of birthdays and it was great making so many different styles of cake. The next one I love. it was for a 30th birthday and the lady loves shoes, leopard skin and skull and crossbones so I tried to incorporate them all on the cake.

I've never painted leopard-skin before and the small square rug that she is sitting on took me over an hour and a half to hand-paint. I couldn't even find anything remotely leopard-skin in my wardrobe to copy and needed the lovely Verity back as I know she is partial to a bit of the print!! 
Still it was good fun and all the shoes were fun to do, even the Uggs.

The best day came on the 10th April when my sister gave birth to beautiful twins!!!
Although it was early and they were quite small, they are gorgeous and I can't wait to be able to give them a cuddle!

I am sure we will have loads of celebrations when they both come home from hospital. The staff at the Royal Sussex Hospital were great and looked after my sister so well that I took down some cupcakes to say "Thank You!".

Ian's mum celebrated her birthday as well and we all went to Cafe Rouge. It would have been a lovely dinner if they had remembered to bring mine out!
Still we had a nice evening with the family and then some delicious cakes made by Ian's sister. They were scrummy!!!
I made a few cupcakes as well as a treat.

Now a real celebration...
Having made one of these cakes (or similar) before, I started work on making lots more flower pots and a watering can and lots of flowers for a really special 90th birthday cake. With a new garlic crusher just for icing I had to make sure that Ian didn't use it when he was cooking up one of his specialities! (I think I have a chicken and banana dish tonight although it's a bit of a secret and a surprise - a scandinavian speciality?????)
It's ideal for making grass and hair and is a lot easier than piping!
I've seen the video of the lovely lady receiving the cake from her family and she looked thrilled!

 More cupcakes to come for lots of different mums birthdays. very pink, very girly and very pretty.

Cupcakes again for a special 40th Birthday - This time, the girls as cupcakes and holiday bits to match!

Now one large cupcake for a 13th birthday but in pastel colours. It was fun as I was friends with her mum when I was just a bit older than her daughter is now and it's mad to think how fast time flies!!!!

It has been hard this month as I still have very little voice and have not been at work - I have missed it so much. You wouldn't think that hormonally challenged girls with stroppy attitudes who think they know best would be at the top of my list for things I miss!!!
Well not all of them are like that - I have some gorgeous, hard-working students as well!!!
I have missed staff loads and funnily enough all the marking and target setting - ask me again in a month and I may well be saying something different!!!!
So a good colleague of mine celebrated her 60th and her daughter organised a surprise cake. She certainly doesn't look 60!!

Easter came and went in a flash and after a visit to see the twins (they are sooooo cute!) I started to enjoy the sunshine. It really makes people smile, a bank holiday, the sun and lots of yummy things to eat and drink.

 Our new neighbours moved in and I am looking forward to having lots of dinner parties with them as Sue is a fabulous cook!!!
Ian cooked for them last week and it was a great evening.

On Saint George's day we had a fabulous time at the rugby at Twickenham - the match was great (apart from Wasps being thrashed!!), the sun was out all day and the atmosphere was amazing!
A red and white "Where's Wally" cake and cupcakes seemed appropriate on this very red and white day for a little boy's 6th birthday. The stripes did make my eyes go funny for a while but that's nothing!

I got a bit carried away doing "research" and actually spent ages looking for Wally in the books and on the internet. I didn't realise how many different stories/pictures there were! Still it kept me busy for a while!
With the weather so lovely I was hoping for it to continue right through for the Royal Wedding. Am a sucker for weddings and anything slightly romantic!
I love the film 27 dresses where the actress has been a bridesmaid 27 times but never a bride - that's me but making the cakes for all the weddings!!!!

At very short notice (the day before!!!) we organised a Royal Wedding Garden Party!
It was fabulous!!!
Good on the Prime Minister for saying that everyone should have street parties as all the neighbours came, all ages from the very young (gorgeous Daisy almost one) to the more experienced at 89!
We started with a bubbly breakfast in the garden whilst watching the tv there too and that is where we stayed until dark, singing (well everyone except me!), celebrating and having a ball!
We had a fabulous buffet and everyone had an amazing time watching the most beautiful wedding ever!
Kate looked fabulous and we all were quite emotional (and busy looking out for gorgeous Paul in amongst the guests at the Abbey - you jammy so and so!!!)

I couldn't wait to see the Royal Wedding cake and it didn't disappoint. It wasn't quite what I was expecting but Fiona Cairns and her team did a very good job. Personally I would have favoured the chocolate and rich tea biscuit cake that was also made by McVities!!!!!

On the same day as the wedding a couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary and I made an elegant rose-covered cake that was dusted with gold powder so it shimmered in the light. A Golden Wedding Anniversary - amazing!!!

Still on the "princess" theme, Aimee's 9th birthday cake was also sparkly and very pink!!!

So finally I went back to work this week - Hooray!!!!
To say it has been a bit of a roller-coaster is an understatement and have I enjoyed it?
Well I suppose it's early days. It has been great seeing everyone and the girls have been wonderful - how I have missed them. Still not much voice though and I am beginning to wonder if this is it?
I really hope not and hope to wake up one day back to normal!
It has been quite trying and I have been trying to adapt to losing my voice by 1pm (not good!!!) and there is nowhere to turn. The doctors seem to have conflicting advice, the teaching union has been less than helpful and am not sure where to turn to or what to do. Still, on the positive side, I am back at work albeit in a different role and I still have my friends, my family and my cakes!!!
This morning little Daisy turned one and is hopefully tucking into her lion cake!

So bring back the sun, am looking forward to enjoying the weekend and  to seeing the twins soon!!!



Where has March gone???

Thank you to so many people for their kind words and support over the last month, I know I have fabulous friends, colleagues and an amazing family and I am really grateful for everything that you have all done to keep me positive and keep my spirits up!
Thank you also to everyone who has e-mailed asking where my blog has been!
I know it has been a while but it has been a tough few weeks but I feel that I am on the road to recovery (which has seemed like a long and winding road with bumps, lumps and hiccups!). I still have little voice and quite a bit of pain so it has been fairly quiet at home (Ian thinks that is a good think I am sure!) but hopefully I can see light at the end of the tunnel!
So with lots of time on my hands and to take my mind off of stressing about work, students, exams, marking etc I have tried to keep busy. I have read loads and made lots of cakes. It's easy to do as I don't need to talk to anyone!

When the consultant said "Don't talk,  relax and don't worry or you could cause permanent damage" - you would think that that would be easy advice to follow! 
Oh my word - easier said than done!
I think I inherited the worry gene from my mum!
Anyone that knows me knows that I don't sit still and don't often stop running around. Me - relax??? ha ha!
So keeping me busy I took on a few more cakes as well as the orders I had. Therapeutic and calmimg, for a while and there is only so much daytime tv a girl can watch!

Fisrt was Amanda's daughter's 18th, a pretty pink affair.

Katy asked for a Hawaiian themed Elvis cake for her mum and I had made most of the models during half-term so it was a case of making sure Elvis was blinging and mum was relaxing on a sunbed for her 50th. It was super cute and it was so lovely seeing Katy again even if I couldn't speak to her very much!!

Little Charlie was 1 - How time flies and although I missed his party, he loves "In the night garden" so a brightly coloured character cake was so much fun - I think I am well up on CeeBeebies now, even watched a couple of episodes to see what it was all about. It's bizarre and a little disturbing in parts (What's the Ninky Nonk???) but hopefully Charlie loved Upsy Daisy.

Liam's birthday cake next and a three tier, black white and silver cake meant my kitchen was covered in silver spray and dust for days - It kept me busy cleaning!
A Charlton fan (like most of my family) meant a badge and a man in Charlton strip on top - cute!

Then came my gorgeous sister's baby shower. She is expecting twins and I am so excited!
It was a chance to show her how much she is adored and how excited we all are in the family. Now having so much time and not sleeping well meant lots of shopping on the internet. This has been going on for weeks and you probably remember that I blamed my noisy neighbour for keeping me up. I suppose I am rather grateful that I looked up so many websites and found so many beautiful things. I went with a Noah's Ark theme (I love animals!!) and this was reflected in all the decorations, balloons, table covers and table ware.The cake was easy too and I had made all the cupcake toppers in haf-term in preparation so the animals were ready to go on top!

Everybody had their own cupcake box and could choose which animal they wanted to take home!
Mum and dad were fab and we had a production line going to make up party bags one evening. I love party bags!

Everyone had champagne truffles, chocolate bars, baby charms for keyrings, "Bonne Maman" jam, a Noah's Ark candle, and a baby cookie!
It was lovely seeing people's faces as they were leaving, clutching a party bag - they are not just for children!!!!
Mum and dad helped with the food and we had enough to feed an army!
It was such a lovely day and I couldn't have done it without my adorable nieces who read out all the quizzes and questions, explained all the games and who were absolutely amazing. they were my voice for the day and I love them for it!
My sister's friends were all so lovely and spoilt her rotten. She is amazing and really deserves to be spoilt. I know that she had a lovely day and now we are all waiting for the twins to arrive.

Dad put his capentry skills to work and made a gorgeous wooden Noah's ark and mum has been knitting like crazy. These twins are going to be spoilt rotten! (My sister too!)

Kirsty need a celebration cake for her 40th and her ginger hero was just the ticket!
I was flagging a bit and struggling so was so glad that my friend Pen helped out - well helped to keep me awake and kept me laughing all evening!
Pen thought it would be good to have a competition to make a muscleman out of fondant but unfortunately due to Pen's glass of wine (or two) her's was a little too disturbing too use!
Pen did all the talking and directing and instructing (ha ha) Thank's Pen - your a star!!!

So three weeks later and several visits to the consultant and a wonderful speech therapist I hadn't seen much change. With no voice still and still feeling a bit down, cards from school and friends kept me going and 8D - you are the best!!!
I miss my girls so much and I hope they are all behaving!

A few more cakes (It has been four weeks!!!) and I feel less anxious. Leah's christening cake was a cutey and she was an absolute star at her Christening. She has grown so much!

Cupcakes for Jo's son Tom (although forgot to take a photo!) had beer, cricket and Millwall shirts on as well as 18 and his name.
Alison's cake was a challenge and certainly kept me occupied. She wanted a Mini Countryman car (and I have to admit had never even heard of one!). Chocolately and gooey I tried to match it to her car and it took a while trying to get all the deatils right, the lights, the grill and the windows - more silver glitter and more dust!

I was really pleased with the result and hope she liked it!
A "Belle" cake for a three year old reminded me of making this cake for my niece. I love Disney and their characters.

The Landlord of our local pub turned 50 last week and he loves to fish so this fisherman cake seemed ideal for him. He loved it!

Last weekend was Pete's birthday - 60 - going on 18!
He is my neighbour and I love him dearly. He is one of the funniest people I have met and makes me laugh all the time. Pete is fab and a loyal Charlton supporter so a big cake was a must!
He played hockey (hence the orange hockey shirts), loves football, loves a pint (or two!!!), loves Charlton and most of all loves Carol, so all of these needed to go on his cake, somewhere.
He had a great party and certainly doesn't look 60!

So that's about it as far as cakes go. They have certainly kept me busy whilst I have been off and I am grateful as I needed to take my mind off targets, results, marking and teaching.
Mother's day was lovely and it was so nice to see both my family and Ian's and thank you for being patient in trying to understand what I say!
What would we do without family????
It makes you realise that you take things like your voice for granted and I know for sure that I don't always look after it. Now I am paying the price and am hoping to get it back soon or I will need to rethink my career path!
What do you do when the only job you have ever really loved doing becomes impossible to do?
I love my job and I have missed it more than anything. There is nothing like a classfull of eager and enthusiastic students to make you feel proud. Then again, not all of them are that eager...or enthusiastic come to think of it! But they are all fab and do make me proud. The staff are great too!
So now I feel a bit more positive and with the thought of surgery making me do all the exercises the speech therapist is giving me - I want to thank everyone for their texts, e-mails and visits and hope to be back to normal (as close as!) soon xx

Baby showers and champagne!

To say that the last week or so has been awful is an understatement!
Half-term was busy and productive but towards the end I started feel a little under the weather again - my voice went and I felt quite poorly - again.
Sorry to feel sorry for myself but am fed up with feeling poorly!

Wednesday of half-term and we finally did our "R" and "S" of our hotel project. Thje Ritz was...well... not really what I had imagined or had been looking forward to. It was all a bit unimpressive - surprisingly so!
The waiter in the Rivoli bar was a bit full of himself and tried too hard to impress but the cocktail I had on the other hand was gorgeous!
They were quite expensive compared to the other hotels although mine did have gold leaf floating in it!
Not as bad as the Mandarin Oriental  but nowhere near as good as Claridges.
The Savoy was...fabulous. Different from what we were expecting as lots of things have changed but still good service and a wonderful atmosphere. I used to meet Ian in the Savoy for cocktails quite a lot when he worked in the Strand and fell in love with the American bar. It's a  bit different now, maybe a little of the "old-fashioned and classic" element missing (but now lots of dust on the mirrors and vases!!!)
Apart from the waitress spilling my cocktail all over my dress and leg - it was lovely.
We miss the Banquette restaurant but no-one seemed to know what we were talking about - New staff - a shame as they don't seem to know what it used to be like!
Still haven't done our scrapbooking pages - they are next on my list!

Thursday I met with my business managers for lunch (my champagne Friday girls!!!). They sorted my website and were brilliant!
Friday I made toppers for all the baby shower cakes, Bill's taxi topper and finished off the palm trees and Elvis for cakes for the next few weeks.

 I have two baby showers on Sunday and also wanted to make some cakes for baby Leah as I went to visit on Saturday - she is gorgeous. The toppers were really cute and I managed to make about 60.

Nicola's dad is a taxi driver and so I made a topper for his cake. He is very sporty and loves a G&T as well. Apparently it was a very good likeness - bless.

Saturday I didn't feel so good and still had to make the cakes for the baby showers. It was quite hard work and my voice decided to go - just in time for going back to work!
The baby shower for Jude was lovely. I don't think I have ever been in a room full of so many mothers and babies and children - it was quite something!
The ladies were lovely and the children cute!
I went with a baby clothes theme for the top cake as I had made so many babygros (is that the plural?)
I knew that the nursery was yellow so tried to match the cute cakes with her theme. I kind of loved the result - baby cakes are so cute!!!

I admire anyone with a baby and how they cope with all the washing!!!

My new stand came in handy and the cakes went down really well! You can't beat cute cupcakes!

Sunday night arrived and my head began to pound. I wasn't quite sure if it was all the babies and children, or all the talk of pregnancies and childbirth (do people always need to go into so much detail??? It made me squirm a bit but I guess it is a such a wonderful experience that people just want to share every single detail with you!) or all the questions about why I wasn't a mother (hello! - I haven't got time!) but by the time I got home I was feeling very under the weather. I had one last cake to make for Amy for the morning and then I could sleep - or I could if Mr Neighbour turned his bloody radio off!!!
No chance there then!

Monday and back to work. I rather missed the girls and their funny comments and actions. No voice again- just a croak but managed to get through the day. First of the month comes around so quickly and thank goodness that Mo came round to help decorate the staff cakes. It was St. David's day so daffodils were in order on some of the 150 cupcakes.

I let Mo loose on the lemon ones - haha she was a bit pyschedelic in her use of sprinkles and decorations but they were bright and colourful. New mixer with a very sharp blade meant chopping the top of my finger of whilst washing up. Thank goodness Mo is a nurse!!!! Not sure who was more exhausted me or Mo!
Monday night was horrendous - no sleep, no voice, sore throat and a pounding head. I managed only to get to work and then home again.
The doctor said I had a very nasty ear and chest infection and high blood pressure (I'm not surprised as shouting at Mr Noisy Neighbour every night is quite stressful!) -so bed and rest for me. Thank goodness for parents - what would I do without them!
I haven't felt that bad for ages and 2011 is turning into a horrible year already!
Packets of pills and anti-biotics later I must have slept for a good 48 hours!
I still feel dreadful and really want someone to take it all away but at least I can touch the side of my face now!
Perhaps the voice will come back in time for school tomorrow - fingers crossed!
I still had to make Aston's surprise cake for his 30th - that was hard work!

Then this weekend it was a christening cake for my sister's friend. Another cute baby cake with a blue theme this time.

 Fortunately no more for a little while. All I have done is sleep in between!
Mr Noisy Neighbour decided to have the radio on (Radio 4  now) all night last night from 1.30a.m. to 8.30a.m so no change there!
May need to move if there is no improvement. Anyone know an electrician who can show me how to turn his power off?????
I've missed work and the girls - funny but when I'm there I long for holidays most of the time. I'm hoping they have behaved and have worked hard but something tells me I will have a lot to catch up with!
Please let me feel better in the morning!!!!!

From Vintage to Modern!

I am sitting here taking time out having a cup of coffee and a sneaky biscuit!
How I love half-term!!!!
Well if I could get away without doing any school work and if I was on a hot, sunny island somewhere it would be even better but you can't have it all!!
So the last two weeks have been really busy - cakes, school, baby showers and no voice -AGAIN!
What is with the no voice thing????
I get so fed up of waking up (well that is when I have actually had some sleep thanks to Mr Neighbour with BBC World Service ALL NIGHT!!!!!) and having no voice and feeling like I have been hit by a bus!
At least it doesn't last - maybe I am allergic to school - how cool would that be!
So it's half-term and it's busy, busy, busy!
Last week was mad, especially last weekend. I am still cleaning up icing sugar and food colouring!
So where to start?
John's birthday continued and they celebrated on Wednesday with Nintendo cupcakes - he has favourites so I had to make sure there was a Yoshi, a Mario and a Luigi. I love these, they are so colourful and cute.

I got very excited when my ribbon arrived - all printed and very pretty. Am aiming to get them in every colour!!! (I have five already!)

Roary the Racing car was fun to do for Ashton's 4th birthday. With no children of my own I have to look up all these characters on the internet and I do get a bit carried away. I will be a font of all knowledge soon on CBeebies!!!
May go on Mastermind!!!
Anyway he was fun and I love the hat.
Louise's aunt (very lovely lady!!!) had her birthday too and this was a combination of her caravan, her holidays and her crafting.

She is a very artistic lady and is always making/crafting. I wanted to add little bits and pieces for the scrapbooking and card-making. I loved the pritt stick although if you don't use it very often you may have wondered what it was!

The next one on my list was one I have been working on for ages. Another children's one and LOTS of research!
The Octonauts (had never even heard of them!) were lots of fun and lots of work. I made all the characters in advance - they were so cute and I tried to get them all spot on. It was a lot of work but really enjoyable.

They apparently live/work underwater so I loved making the underwater themed cake with fish, crabs, seaweed and starfish. It's cute!

I haven't seen my friend for years so it was lovely dropping the cake off and catching up with her and meeting the boys - they are gorgeous too. We nearly had a disaster when Will decided craftily to play with Tweak bunny whilst we were having a cup of tea - bless him!!!

More cupcakes for Hannah's birthday. She is mad about dogs/puppies so doggy cupcakes were perfect. I have made these before so tried to make diferent dogs - I love their faces!

This weekend too was busy with a joint 18th and 21st birthday cake for Gemma and Jamie. Gemma is one of my former students - she is a star!!
Gemma loves shopping, shoes and dresses and Jamie loves sport.

The top tier was a false top so they could keep it and put the characters on it to keep. It was silver and sparkly!
At the last minute I had an order for 80 cupcakes for a vintage fair in Blackheath. Half of the cakes had the company initials (My Vintage Affair) and half had roses, violets and sprinkles.

They looked pretty in the vintage cake stands but I forgot to take a photo!
Jo's vintage fair was great - the clothes were amazing and it was like walking back into the fifties. Women were having their hair and make-up done and trying on all the clothes. It was fabulous!
I ended up buying a coat which makes me look like my gran in the fifties and sixties!
So I am having a morning off making cakes (well will start in about ten minutes!) and am concentrating on organising a baby shower for my sister. It's fun and exciting. think I might be going a bit overboard on somethings though. I looked up American baby showers and they do things so much better than us!
I know it's a relatively new idea over here and some people are still a bit sceptical but I think it's great - another excuse to celebrate (and make cakes!).
Every day I come home and another parcel arrives!
I think the lack of sleep means I go onto the internet at all hours and end up ordering bits and pieces!
My neighbour has a lot to answer to!!!
Tomorrow we are off to the Ritz and the Savoy for our "R" and "S" in the alphabet project. I can't wait - it's long overdue!
Thursday I am looking forward to having my "Champagne Friday" girls over for lunch, fun and business. I need their advice!!!!

Fish cakes and swimming pools!!

There are two things I really dislike in the world. (only two this morning but plenty of others at any other time!) One is inconsiderate people and the other is snoring!
I am so tired I think I could sleep for a week!
Well I could only do that if my neighbour managed to turn down his radio that he leaves on ALL NIGHT on BBC World service (yes it beeps on the hour, every hour too!) even if he is asleep as I can hear him snoring too!!!
Sometimes he even leaves the TV on too in another room - just how much can a man listen to in his sleep!!!!!
Also men with colds snore terribly and this just adds to my sleep deprivation as my man has a cold, it's not good. Snoring drives me mad - I NEED SLEEP otherwise I am a grumpy so and so with a short temper!!
So this week has been good for work and cakes but rubbish for sleep. I think now I am over-tired and it makes me a tearful bunny!
Anyway - half term is only in two weeks (thank goodness) and I am going to spend at least one day tucked under my duvet without moving!
Burn's night dinner party was fab- it was such a giggle and good to catch up with lovely people. Lots of haggis and neeps and tatties although not many kilts!!!!

Last night was John's surprise party for his 30th. His family and girlfriend are so lovely - he didn't have a clue!

His cake had a "fishy" theme as he is mad on fishing. It was a rather strange one but lots of fun. My kitchen was covered in silvery dusting powder for days!
Simon's 40th cake was an American themed one as he apparently loves Buffalo Bills (which I thought was a restaurant until I looked it up!) That ties in nicely with the Superbowl tonight!!!

Grace's birthday on Monday and she is a little swimming star so I thought a pool themed cake would be perfect for her. Her parents threw a fab dinner party last weekend - it was so yummy- thank you!!!

The 1st of the month came round quite quickly and it meant 150 cupcakes for staff at school. I thought I would try a couple of new flavours and some "low-fat" cakes for all the dieting girls!!!
I used a new embossing tool for the fondant topped ones - very pretty paisley designed ones. It was my new cake tool of the week!
We had a Valentine's theme (yes a little early I know) but lots of hearts/roses and chocolate!!!

Just what we all needed in the staffroom at the end of dreary January and a week filled with meetings and a Parent's evening, a little bit of love and buttercream. Now we just need a little bit of sunshine!!!

Yesterday I met up with the girls from Uni in Sussex - oh how we have grown up (ha ha!!!) It was so lovely to get together again for the first time in ages - not as alcohol fuelled as it was back in those days after lectures, then parties in the flats - but much more civilised now we have sort of grown up. Two weddings and one gorgeous baby have changed all that. Well I say that, but we have planned a weekend away and we may resort back to good old uni days, karaoke, Spice girls and beer!

February is full for cakes and I'm glad of a week in the middle to spend all day preparing bits.
Still haven't been to the Ritz to do "R" in our hotel "project"  maybe next week if we can fit it in. It's Chinese new year so we are all heading to the restaurant on Friday to celebrate - should be fun!

Well I need to go and make a caravan, a car, some stars, some shopping bags and some roses for the next batch. I'm going to need lots of coffee and maybe an afternoon snooze so I can then mark all the girls' tests for tomorrow - and I have an observation first thing - I can't wait!
